Silent call fines set to rise

THE maximum fine for firms which cause nuisance and distress to people through silent and abandoned phone calls will rise from £50,000 to £2 million, the Government said today.

Silent calls are generated by automated calling systems, which in some cases dial more numbers than there are staff available to speak to those picking up the phone.
