Six works were unveiled in miniature yesterday – two of which will be chosen for display on the square’s empty “fourth plinth”, one of the city’s platforms for public art.

They include Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley’s 32ft bronze thumb and two 13ft “dancing” aluminum cones by American artist Liliane Lijn.

Also on the shortlist is German-American artist Hans Haacke’s skeleton horse with an electronic stock exchange ticker tied to its leg.

Two of the works will be chosen for display in 2015 and 2016.

The plinth was erected in 1841 for an equestrian statue that was never completed and long stood empty. Since 1999 it has been occupied by artworks.
