Sheridan solicitor to join hacking inquiry

TOMMY Sheridan’s solicitor is to take part in the inquiry into the phone-hacking scandal. .

Aamer Anwar said he welcomed the chance to make written submissions to the Leveson Inquiry during its first stage.

Mr Anwar represented Sheridan in his perjury trial, which centred around the former socialist MSP’s successful 2006 defamation action against the News of the World. Several senior figures from the now-defunct newspaper gave evidence in last year’s trial, which resulted in Sheridan being convicted and jailed for three years.

During the trial, Sheridan alleged that his mobile phone was hacked into by private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was jailed in 2007 after plotting to intercept voicemail messages while working for the News of the World.

Last week, actor Hugh Grant, author JK Rowling and the parents of Madeleine McCann were named as core participants in the first stage of the process.
