Scottish independence: Second vote call over EU

A SECOND independence referendum should be called if the No campaign is defeated next month and Scotland is pulled out of the EU against its will in the in-out vote on Europe David Cameron is planning, campaigners have claimed.

The European Movement in Scotland said Scots should get the chance to vote on independence again in 2017 if they don’t opt to leave the UK on 18 September and then the UK votes to leave the EU in the UK-wide referendum Mr Cameron has pledged if he wins the 2015 General Election.

Supporters of the group suggested that Scotland could be outvoted by the rest of the UK in an in-out referendum on Europe and be pulled out of the EU against the wishes of the majority of people north of the border.

Derek Hammersley, chairman, European Movement in Scotland said: “This is absolutely not about the approaching independence referendum. It is instead about whether strongly held views in other parts of the UK should affect Scotland’s constitutional position within the EU.

“We have members who will value membership of the UK more than membership of the EU should this situation arise and vice versa.

“What we all agree on is that such a significant constitutional change as the UK quitting the EU would require Scots revisiting the issue of their relationship with their neighbours on this island.”
