Scottish independence: Alex Salmond to visit London

THE First Minister will set out his vision for an independent Scotland at a special event in London next month.

Alex Salmond will give a lecture, Scotland’s Future in Scotland’s Hands, followed by an audience question and answer session.

The event has been organised by political magazine the New Statesman, and it will be held on March 4 in central London.

Jason Cowley, editor of the New Statesman, said: “Alex Salmond is one of the most provocative and powerful figures in British politics.

“He is a formidable campaigner and communicator and is convinced he can lead Scotland to independence.

“I interviewed him in Edinburgh last year and now I’m delighted he is coming to London at our invitation. It should be a great night.”

Mr Salmond said: “Scotland’s referendum is a unique and historic opportunity to deliver a fairer, more socially just and more prosperous society.

“I am looking forward to using this New Statesman lecture to outline how an independent Scotland will be both a progressive beacon and a powerful economic counterweight to the pull of London, which can help rebalance the social and economic structure across these islands which has seen the UK become one of the most unequal societies in the developed world.”
