More than 150 dead after earthquake in Afghanistan and Pakistan

A powerful earthquake hit north-eastern Afghanistan and Pakistan this afternoon, causing more than a hundred deaths and serious destruction. The earthquake reportedly had a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale and was accompanied by severe aftershocks. Among the dead were 12 Afghan schoolgirls who were killed in a crush while attempting to escape their school building.

Feminist Germaine Greer has faced criticism from both the press and social media today after sharing her views on transgender women during a TV interview. Greer defended previous statements on transgender women, claiming those who were born male were not ‘real’ women. She also said misoginy was behind Glamour magazine’s decision to make Caitlyn Jenner their Woman of the Year. Students at Cardiff University have called for Greer’s upcoming on-campus lecture to be cancelled as a result of her comments.

Gianni Infantino enters Fifa presidency race

UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino has announced that he will stand in the upcoming Fifa presidential election. Infantino has occupied his current position since 2009 and reportedly has the unanimous backing of Uefa’s Executive Committee to take the top job. Twitter speculation today suggests that Infantino’s entrance into the race is a stop-gap for Uefa president Michel Platini.
