Sainsbury’s plans to double sales of British food

Sainsbury’s has announced plans to double the amount of British food it sells by 2020.

Increasing customer demand for home-grown food and a long-term plan to improve sustainability will see the supermarket embark on a drive to increase sales from more than £4 billion to more than £8bn within the next nine years.

Chief executive Justin King announced the plans at the supermarket’s annual agricultural supplier conference in Birmingham yesterday in a speech to 1,700 farmers, growers and suppliers.

He said: “This presents a great opportunity for British farmers, as Sainsbury’s customers increasingly ask for more quality British food.”

The drive is part of the Sainsbury’s 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan.
