Royal Mail sell-off plan ‘a disaster’

PRIVATISING Royal Mail would be a disaster for Britain, the leader of the TUC has warned.

Frances O’Grady, speaking at the annual conference of the Communication Workers Union, which is fighting to stop a Royal Mail sell-off, vowed to co-ordinate industrial action against “attacks” on employees.

She said previous sell-offs had led to higher train fares, rocketing energy prices and bumper pay for executives.

The CWU has launched a campaign against Royal Mail privatisation.

Ms O’Grady told the conference in Bournemouth yesterday that workers never took strike action lightly, adding: “We will not stand by and see services cut and workers walked over.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail has improved its financial situation, but we need to do more to put ourselves on a sound footing. By obtaining access to external money, we can invest in the business.”
