Remploy closures ‘right for disabled’

THE CLOSURE of Remploy factories, threatening 1,700 jobs, is the right thing to do to support disabled workers, the Deputy Prime Minister insisted.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions, Nick Clegg said the controversial move was made on the basis of evidence and had been backed by some disability groups.

He was challenged on the policy, announced last week and subject to a late-night unscheduled ministerial statement, by Labour MP Helen Goodman.

Remploy factories provide work for disabled people and there are 54 across the UK.
