Recall for 500,000 toys that carry 'date rape drug'

UP TO 500,000 children's craft toys are being recalled across the UK and Ireland after concerns that the product contains a chemical that converts to a powerful "date rape" drug when ingested.

The move follows reports that children in the US and Australia have been taken to hospital after swallowing the Bindeez beads.

Character Group - the toys' UK distributor - has now asked shops and consumers to return the products.

There had been no cases of illness reported in the UK and Ireland, but the firm said the recall was issued as a precautionary measure.

Richard King, chairman of Character Group, said: "We believe the product is safe, but it's going to be some time until we get results of the toxicology test reports, and rather than take a chance, we have taken this precaution."

The toy beads, made in China, can be arranged into designs and fused together when sprayed with water.

Scientists say that, when ingested, a chemical coating on the beads metabolises into the "date rape" drug gamma hydroxy butyrate.

Character Group said it believed an "unapproved formulation" may have been used in the manufacturing process. Replacement products will be sent to all consumers and retailers affected by the recall.

Consumers with concerns should call 0800 023 4529.
