RBS customers locked out of iPhone and Android apps

RBS customers are currently unable to log into their accounts using the bank’s official mobile application, it has been confirmed.

RBS says it is working to fix the problem, and that no other systems are affected. There are believed to be up to 2 million registered users of RBS Group banking apps across the UK between the Royal Bank of Scotland, Natwest and Ulster Bank brands.

The outage follows reports of the biggest ever cyberattack which took place earlier this week, and was aimed at an anti-spam watchdog. Experts have warned that the attack could have repercussions on the wider internet.

Last year, a week-long system failure caused by a failed software upgrade meant some customers of RBS-owned NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland were unable pay bills, receive salary payments or finalise house purchases as money refused to transfer between accounts.

RBS was largely nationalized during the 2008 banking crisis and remains 82 percent-owned by taxpayers.
