Pupils taught wrong lessons

PUPILS at one of Britain’s top state schools were taught the wrong syllabus for a year.

The blunder at Emmanuel College in Gateshead was only discovered on the eve of the exam, when the 15-year-olds found out they had studied the wrong First World War poems for their GCSE English literature exam.

Before the gaffe the pupils, who were sitting the exams a year early, had been predicted to sail through with A and A* grades.

Headteacher Jonathan Winch said: "I am sincerely sorry for what was undeniably a mistake but the pupils were able to take copies of the correct text into the exam, so we are very confident they will do well."
