Stephen Hawking is often caught up in the finer points of theoretical physics, but on Saturday night he found himself caught up in a stag night in Cambridge.

Prof Hawking was snapped with Chris Hallam, 29, and ten friends who had dressed as Bananaman for a night out. The group turned a corner and bumped into Prof Hawking getting out of his car, and the author of A Brief History of Time agreed to pose with them for a photograph. Mr Hallam, a self-employed builder from Norwich, said: “We only came across Professor Hawking because we were lost. We were just looking for a bar and spotted him getting out of his car. His son asked him ‘Should we ditch the meal and go out with these boys?’ They could have just told us to carry on but they were all brilliant.” Mr Hallam is due to marry fiancée Kizzy Davis, 34, on 29 March
