Police horse shows no ill effects after fan attack

Bud the police horse is showing no ill effects after being attacked by a football fan as trouble flared after the Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland.

In footage posted online, a man wearing a bandana is apparently seen aiming a punch at the animal, before being wrestled to the ground by riot police.

The horse was given some time off from frontline duties yesterday. Inspector Trevor Thackray, of West Yorkshire Police’s mounted section, said: “We are pleased to say that Bud is totally fine and resting up after Sunday’s operation in Newcastle.

“Our police horses are used to dealing with all types of disorder so, while the images on the news may have looked shocking, Bud wasn’t hurt and his regular training ensures that he is acclimatised to this type of situation.”
