Overseas smartphone costs alert

SMARTPHONE users were warned yesterday they could face huge bills if they connect to the internet abroad.

The cost of using devices such as the iPhone are currently unlimited when web services are accessed in Europe and around the world.

This is set to change in the 27 countries of the European Union from 1 July, when new rules come into force which cap data download costs.

Consumer group Which? said it wanted the EU limits extended to the rest of the world.

The costs apply if smartphone users check e-mails or surf the internet – functions which are normally included in unlimited download packages under most UK tariffs.
