New academy to train young film-makers

Ministers announced plans yesterday for a new £3 million film academy to train the next generation of British movie-makers.

The new academy, aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds, will be led by the British Film Institute (BFI).

The new academy will operate in the evenings and on Saturdays in centres around the country, and will cater for around 5,000 youngsters.

It will work with schools, colleges and the film industry to identify talented young people.

Education Secretary Michael Gove said: “The new academy is open to young people from all backgrounds.

“But I am especially keen that those who don’t have certain advantages still get the best chance to have a career in films.

“This project should provide opportunities to young people who might otherwise miss out.

“The academy will play its part in helping ensure the British film industry remains competitive.”

The announcement comes at a time when government funding for the arts is being cut.
