MPs say pensioners given 'raw deal' by tax system

MPs today accused HM Revenue and Customs of giving older people a "raw deal", leading to millions of pensioners paying too much tax.

The Public Accounts Committee said HMRC's systems were complex to the point where they confused many people, while they did not cope well with the multiple sources of income many older people had.

Committee chairman Edward Leigh said: "The truth is that millions of older people are paying too much tax."
