Movie fans celebrate Back to the Future Day

Today is the date Marty and Doc crashed into the future in the second of the three time-hopping sci-fi adventure films.

Mad scientist Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, types in October 21 2015, 30 years into the future to help the future children of Marty McFly, played by Michael J Fox.

And fans across the country have been preparing to celebrate the occasion.

Charlie Moore, 33, a comic book shop worker from Glasgow, claims he has seen the different films in the trilogy several hundred times.

He saw them when they first came out and has since owned them on VHS, DVD, Blu Ray and will watch the films every time they are on the TV schedule.

The super-fan has spent thousands on memorabilia from the trilogy including Marty McFly’s baseball cap, Doc Brown’s glasses, a replica of the almanac from the second film and a signed picture of Christopher Lloyd.

Charlie said that the appeal of the film was that he would constantly find out new pieces of trivia in every viewing.

He said: “I’m planning on a having a great night in with my friends and some pizza to watch the trilogy together.

“Everybody, no matter who they are, would love to go back in time and change something.

“It’s that butterfly effect of even the slightest change to the past can dramatically change the course of history.

“It’s smart, funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s become such a phenomenon and it deserves to be.

“Including VHS, DVD, Blu Ray and any time it comes on TV, I must have seen the films easily a couple of hundred times.

“They’re the perfect escapism films and has such an 80s feel.

“My favourite of the trilogy is the first film but the second one is where a lot of my collection comes from because that’s the one where the advertising and merchandise was really over-the-top.

“Over the years I must have spent thousands on different merchandise with things like Marty’s baseball cap, Doc Brown’s glasses, shirts, posters, the Lego set, a hot wheels DeLorean from the second film, a replica almanac and I even went to London to meet Christopher Lloyd at a convention. “

Paul Mackie, 43, runs FirstDrive Cars in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, and has owned a DeLorean for the past two years which he has since restored.

The car became widely known and iconic for its appearance, modified as a time machine, in the Back to the Future film trilogy.

Film fans have travelled from all across the country to have a shot at driving the iconic car, but he admits he has not yet attempted to drive it up to 88 miles per hour.

Paul’s car has been on display at the Grampian Museum of Transport, but will be unleashed today (Wed) at Haddo House, Ellon, for a fundraising event.

Paul is on holiday in Spain with his friends for the big day but said that he has brought the DVD of the second film over for them all to watch.

He said: “I bought the car because I thought it was cool but only realised since I got it what a massive following it has with Back to the Future fans.

“I’m surprised by how popular it is - it’s certainly more popular than I am.

“The car is so great and I’m very lucky to have it. It’s such a cool car which always makes people smile whenever they see it.

“Most people of a certain age know what a DeLorean is but not everyone has been up so close and personal with the real thing.

“It’s good fun to drive but I haven’t been brave enough to get it up to the magical speed of 88 yet.

“It drives fine but you don’t buy a DeLorean to go fast - you buy one because it looks cool.

“It’s unbelievable how many people have been trying to loan it out for the big day. But the people who asked for it managed to book it last year.

“I don’t charge people to use it because I like sharing it but I always ask that those who are looking at it donate some money to a Parkinson’s charity.

“My mother-in-law was unfortunate enough to die horribly of Parkinson’s last year and, of course, the film’s star Michael J Fox is suffering from it at the moment.

“It feels like a nice tie-in.

“We’ll be having a mini Back to the Future themed night over here in Spain to celebrate the day.

“It’s a brilliant, unique film. There’s nothing like it and I don’t think there will ever be another film like it.

“I’m more of a fan of the film now than when I first bought the car since I’ve seen how much fun the fans of the film are.”
