More than 5,000 people were evacuated from surrounding buildings as flames and smoke shot from a manhole in Holborn. Firecrews managed to contain the blaze on Wednesday evening after dousing the hole with water before they smashed the cover open with a sledgehammer. Water was pumped into the open hole overnight from multiple hoses but by 11am today the ‘complex’ fire had still not been fully extinguished.
