She was appointed after Dame Janet Smith, who is leading the inquiry into Jimmy Savile’s activities, said she would not be able to oversee the investigation because of a potential conflict of interest. Hall, the former host of the game show It’s A Knockout, who was also a regular football commentator, has admitted indecently assaulting 13 girls, including one aged just nine. He is yet to be sentenced.

The BBC said the potential conflict of interest arose because Dame Janet “knows personally an individual who was a member of senior management in BBC North West at the relevant time”.
