The unusual decision to open on a Monday meant the much-anticipated film, playing at 647 screens, secured the biggest Tuesday takings ever for a UK film.

The 24th Bond movie also beat its predecessor Skyfall which took £6.2m on its Friday opening in 2012.

Spectre subsequently broke the box office record for Wednesday too when it took £5.74m.

It is now on course to beat the £20.1m that Skyfall earned from its opening weekend and helped it become the UK’s highest-grossing movie of all time with a total of £102.9m.

Daniel Craig’s fourth outing, however, has met with mixed reviews and stands at a 77 per cent approval rating on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes versus Skyfall’s 93 per cent.

Jurassic World remains the movie to overtake for the title of UK’s biggest film of 2015, bringing in £63.7m, however, both will face competition from Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it opens on December 17.
