Items sold from ship that saved Titanic’s passengers

ARTEFACTS from the liner that rescued hundreds of the stricken Titanic’s passengers a century ago have been sold at auction.

A medal awarded to crew members of the RMS Carpathia, which saved more than 700 people after the Titanic struck an iceberg in the Atlantic, fetched £1,875 when it was sold at Bonhams in London.

The commemorative medal bears the inscription: “Presented to the Captain Officers and Crew of RMS Carpathia in recognition of gallant and heroic service from the Survivors of the SS Titanic.”

A painting of the ship by British artist Frank Henry Mason was sold for £5,805. It exceeded expectations by selling for £805 over the guide price.

The Carpathia was en route from New York to Europe when it heeded the Titanic’s distress call in the early hours of 15 April 1912 and raced 58 miles to the ill-fated liner’s location.

Although the Titanic had sunk by the time it arrived, the Carpathia spent four hours rescuing survivors before turning to New York.
