Honorary degree for Reid sparks outrage

A DECISION by a Scottish university to award former defence secretary John Reid an honorary degree has sparked outrage.

Stirling University plans to honour Reid, who studied history and was a former president of the student union there, "in recognition of his outstanding contribution to public affairs".

The decision has caused anger due to Reid's role in taking Britain into the war in Iraq.

Students have condemned the proposal, and called on the university to withdraw its offer. Kevin McVey, president of the university's Socialist Students Society, said

"What John Reid did as defence minister has brought dishonour to the university." He said students planned a protest at the ceremony next month.

A spokesman for Stirling University said: "Dr John Reid is being recognised for his contribution to politics in the UK."
