The widower of honeymooner Michaela McAreavey at the trial of two men accused of her murder, branded a defence lawyer a liar. Barrister Sanjeev Teeluckdharry had outlined the allegations of police using brutality to extract a confession as he opened his defence case in the supreme court in Port Louis, Mauritius.

Mr McAreavey, in the front row of an otherwise quiet gallery, spoke loudly to make clear his view of the lawyer’s account.

The two accused deny strangling the daughter of Co Tyrone Gaelic football manager Mickey Harte in the Legends Hotel on the holiday island last January.
