Heathrow ‘may not cope’

Heathrow may not be able to cope with the arrival of thousands of extra passengers for this summer’s Olympic Games, according to MPs.

Planes could be left on runways and there could be long queues at immigration, warned the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

Tourists could be deterred from returning to Britain and there seemed to be no plans being made for the extra time needed to unload passengers this summer, the MPs said.

The concerns were expressed in a letter published on the culture committee’s website.

A Border Force spokesperson said: “We are well prepared for the Olympics, with additional staff available for busy periods.”
