Giant egg from elephant bird for sale in London

AN EGG from the elephant bird is displayed by a member of the auction team at Christie’s in London, where it will be included in a sale on the theme of Travel Science and Natural History on 24 April. The egg is expected to sell for £30,000.

The elephant bird was native to Madagascar but was driven to extinction in the 17th century. It grew up to 10ft tall, and its eggs were more than a foot long and contained the equivalent of 160 chicken eggs
