‘Freak event’ kills driver of stock car

A STOCK car driver died in a “freak” high-speed accident when his vehicle flipped over in the middle of a race.

Steve Newman, 36, died at Mildenhall Stadium Raceway in Suffolk on Saturday night.

It is believed his saloon stock car flipped over in what was described as a “major accident”.

Staff and paramedics were able to free Mr Newman from his vehicle and spent 20 minutes trying to revive him but he died at the scene. Mr Newman, who lived in Spalding, Lincolnshire, ran a flooring business.

Yesterday’s races at the stadium were cancelled as a full health and safety investigation got under way.

Co-promoter Ron Coventry said: “This looked like a freak event. We have been holding these kind of events for 20 years here and we have not have serious injury, let alone a fatality like this.”
