Embassy workers 'treated as slaves'

STAFF working at embassies in Britain are being treated as "modern-day slaves", Gordon Brown was told yesterday.

Tory MP Anthony Steen, chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on human trafficking, said domestic staff at missions in the UK were trapped by employment laws that prevented them seeking other work.

Immigration minister Phil Woolas was looking into the situation, Mr Brown said.

Mr Steen said staff at embassies in London were being exploited and abused by diplomats.
