Duke alleged to have hit policeman with car

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into an alleged car accident after claims that Prince Andrew struck a police officer while driving into Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of York reportedly hit the uniformed officer as he tried to usher two Japanese tourists out of the path of the prince's 4x4 as it headed for a side entrance to the palace.

It is understood the officer was injured as the Range Rover sped over lowered steel barriers.

The officer is reported to have hurt his arm in the incident on 5 February and made a complaint to his superiors about the prince's driving.

The duke, who will be 50 next week, has not been questioned by police, but officers are understood to be examining CCTV footage.

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed the accident was being looked into.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman described it as a "health and safety matter" and said police were investigating.

Senior members of the Royal Family frequently drive themselves when travelling privately. Prince Andrew is known for his love of cars, having owned a Bentley Arnage and an Aston Martin.
