Drivers taught about safety at level crossings

BRITISH Transport Police hope to get drivers to make safety a priority at level crossings.

Officers teamed up with Network Rail officials in Kirknewton, West Lothian, to reassure drivers and pedestrians the crossing is safe if used properly.

More than 3,000 vehicles use the Kirknewton crossing every day and it featured in the top five of the most abused crossings in Scotland three years ago.

Superintendent Jim McKelvie, head of operations for BTP in Scotland, said: "The statistics for accidents at level crossings make chilling reading and almost all are caused by motorist or pedestrian misuse."
