Deputy Prime Minister joins in celebrations for International Women’s Day

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg opened trading at the London Stock Exchange along with 50 high-profile business women to celebrate International Women’s Day, in London yesterday.

In a joint statement also to mark International Women’s Day, Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg declared their intention to sign up to the Council of Europe’s Convention on Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.

Men in Britain accused of raping or assaulting women abroad could be put on trial in the UK courts, under the plans announced today.

Once the treaty is ratified into UK law, offenders who cannot be brought to trial in the country where the alleged crime was committed will be able to be prosecuted in the UK.

Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg said the “unprecedented” agreement would help tackle the “utter scandal” of violence and domestic abuse suffered by millions of women. It’s going to lift the standards of protection for women across Europe.”
