Darling pledges 'tough' cuts to fight UK deficit

CHANCELLOR Alistair Darling promised a round of "tough, difficult and non-negotiable" spending cuts today to slash the UK's ballooning deficit.

He said measures to halve the UK's public borrowing over four years were "essential" and that would result in the toughest spending settlement for 20 years.
