Croydon school bans slang words such as ‘innit’

A SCHOOL in Croydon has banned slang words such as “innit”, “coz” and “ain’t”, in an effort to try and help students develop the ‘soft skills’ needed to compete for jobs and university places in the future.

Harris Academic Upper Norwood has also banned the use of words such as “bare”, “extra” and “like”, whilst starting sentences with “basically” or using phrases such as “you woz” and “we woz” has also been deemed too informal.

The south London school said that move has been put into place in order to allow pupils to “express themselves confidently and appropriately”.

The school said in a statement: “In addition to giving students the teaching they need to thrive academically, we want them to develop the soft skills they will need to compete for jobs and university places.

“This particular initiative is just one of the many ways in which we are building the vocabulary of our students and giving them the skills they need to express themselves confidently and appropriately for a variety of audiences.”
