Co-op wants youngsters to make impact

THE Co-operative yesterday announced it is looking for young people to join its national board.

The fifth biggest food retailer in the country will set up a Young Members’ Board in May at its annual meeting. Fifteen youngsters aged between 16 and 25 will join the board, meeting eight times a year in Manchester. They will help to make decisions within the company.

Len Wardle, chairman of the Co-operative Group, believes the decision is in keeping with the company’s philosophy.

“The Co-operative was founded in part by five inspiring and determined young people and the impact of their innovation led to the creation of a global movement of shared and equal ownership that has fairness and honesty at its heart.”

Mr Wardle sees young people as the future, capable of providing the spark that will see the company reaping the rewards.

“We want to ensure that young people continue to drive the Co-operative forward in the future.

“We are on the lookout for the next generation of pioneers to join the Co-operative Young Members’ Board, which will help to shape the future direction of all of our businesses from product innovation through to business development.”
