Calls to cut employers' costs in bid to save jobs

THE government was urged today to cut the cost of employing staff and freeze the minimum wage for young workers to protect jobs.

Two leading business groups wrote to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson warning of the consequences of the 1 per cent increase in employers' National Insurance contributions from April 2011.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development warned that one in eight firms intended to recruit fewer staff.
