SWAPPING a traditional office desk for a lectern style one burns the calories and avoids the health peril of sitting still for too long.

Having a sit-stand desk where employees can choose how they would like to work meant they stood for an extra hour a day and did not go back to their old work routine after the novelty wore off. They also walked an extra six minutes a day on average and burnt off 87 more calories.

Physical exercise is known to reduce the incidence of various chronic diseases but more than half of the average person’s waking day involves prolonged sitting - such as watching TV or using a computer. Researchers found office workers spent over four-fifths of their working day chained to a desk.

The study was published online by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
