Bruno praises 'classy' Harry

BOXER Frank Bruno yesterday paid tribute to "a classy gentleman" at a thanksgiving service for BBC commentator Harry Carpenter, who died at 84 in March.

Many famous faces from sport and TV, including former world champion Barry McGuigan and golf commentator Peter Alliss, attended the service at St Bride's Church in London to pay tribute to "the Voice of Boxing". Bruno could not attend, so broadcaster Des Lynam read out a passage written by him.

"We didn't set out to be a double act. But with my intelligence and Harry's good looks it was inevitable we would go far.

"I could go on for ages about how wonderful Harry was. He was a classy gentleman."
