Bill to scrap Scots MPs post-Yes vote to be tabled

Scottish independence: A BILL which would get rid of Scottish MPs on “independence day” in the event of a yes vote, has been given permission to be tabled in the House of Commons.

The proposed legislation put forward by Western Isles SNP MP Angus MacNeil in a 10-minute rule bill was unopposed by MPs and will be debated formally on 6 June.

Mr MacNeil said it would be wrong for Scottish MPs to continue to sit in the Commons and paid for by voters in the rest of the UK once their constituencies were no longer part of the UK.

And he admitted that his Bill would make him unemployed and could bring about a change in government.

His 10 minute rule bill followed a failed attempt last week by Carlisle Tory MP John Stevenson to use the same Commons procedure to scrap Scottish MPs the day after a Yes vote.

Mr MacNeil said: “It would be wrong for Scottish MPs and their staff to be employed here when their constituents have moved on and become a successful Scotland with an oil fund in the same model of Norway.”
