Bench collapses during Derry City cup photo

WITH an FAI Cup Final to look forward to, Derry City are on something of a high at the moment - but they were brought crashing down to earth during a first-team photo call this week.

Boss Peter Hutton, along with captain Barry Molloy, striker Rory Patterson, midfielder Josh Daniels and defender Patrick McEleney ended up on the floor after the bench they were sitting on collapsed during the team photo at the team’s Brandywell ground.

Newstalk FM’s Team33 tweeted the image, with the caption ‘Bench collapses during @derrycityfc cup final photo, leads to best team shot ever.’

And Aaron Barry and Nathan Boyle were forced to jump to safety to avoid a collision.

Neither Hutton nor his players were injured in the collapse, and admitted they could see the funny side.

“The bench we were sitting on appeared to snap and those players standing directly behind us threatened to collapse on top of us,” Hutton told the Derry Journal.

“Everything has been going so well. We had a full attendance at training earlier in the morning, the sun was shining over the Brandywell and the local photographers were in place before the crash.”

Hutton confirmed that a substitute bench had been brought on and the photograph was eventually taken.

Currently sixth in the League of Ireland, Derry face UCD tonight in their final league match and will take on St Patrick’s Athletic in the FAI Cup Final after defeating Pat Fenlon’s Shamrock Rovers in the semi-final replay last week.

Notable former Derry players include former Celtic winger and fans’ favourite Paddy McCourt; Aberdeen forward Niall McGinn; Republic of Ireland goalkeeper David Forde and Wigan midfielder James McClean.
