Barbie in red sells for a record £9,000

BARBIE in Midnight Red, dating from 1965, sold for a world record £9,000 yesterday as collectors from around the world gathered to bid for a piece of a rare private collection of 4,000 Barbie family dolls. The doll, which had an estimate of up to £600, became the most expensive Barbie ever sold at auction, according to Christie's, which ran the sale in London.

Zebra-print Barbie sells for 2,880

A BRUNETTE Barbie in a zebra-print swimming costume was sold for 2,880 yesterday at a special Christie's auction.

The original No 1 Barbie, made in 1959, whose final price included auction fees, was estimated to reach a top bid of just 1,200.

The doll was one of a collection of 4,000 Barbies being sold at the auction in London.
