‘Back Afghanistan with aid until 2025’

Hard-won gains made by British troops in Afghanistan could be lost if the global community fails to make long-term aid commitments, International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell has warned.

He called on donor countries, meeting in Tokyo this weekend, to “face up” to their responsibilities following troop withdrawal with a commitment to provide aid until 2025. Mr Mitchell, who returned from a two-day trip to Afghanistan yesterday, said in return the Afghans should fight corruption, promote private enterprise and women’s rights.
