Officers said there had previously been contact between police and the suspect, who has not been named.

They are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident on Chells Grove, Billesley.

A friend of the woman, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s really shocking. They think she’s been dead since Friday.”

A neighbour commented: “She was a very private woman. She went out to work at 7am. Her boyfriend was always babysitting.”

She is believed to have an older daughter who was not in the terraced house at the time of the attack.

A police cordon blocked the entrance to the street as forensic investigators scoured the scene.

Superintendent Andy Shipman reassured residents that the man had been arrested and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

He said local officers will be highly visible in the area in the coming week, speaking to residents and reassuring local people.

A post-mortem examination has not yet taken place.
