Ant and Dec: We’ve used drugs - and voted Tory

TV personalities Ant and Dec have admitted taking drugs in the past.

Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly made the admission in an interview with The Guardian. When asked if they had used drugs, Ant said: “Years ago, yeah, but we’re not really druggy people.

“I think you either go into that crowd as a kid or you don’t, and we didn’t. We found the love of alcohol very early on and we stayed with it.”

Ant also admitted to voting Conservative at the last general election. The pair both come from working-class families in Newcastle, and made their big break on the BBC teen drama Byker Grove.

Of his Tory vote, McPartlin said: “(It) would make a lot of my family up north very angry. I haven’t actually told them, so when they read this they’ll go, ‘What?’

“But they certainly couldn’t give an argument for Labour for me at the moment – not a valid one. Then again, I’d struggle to give an argument for voting Conservative at the moment.”

McPartlin and Donnelly also revealed that they thought their careers were over in the wake of the TV phone-in scandal, where some of their shows’ premium-rate phone lines were accepting calls for competitions which had already closed. Donnelly described the time as “just the worst, worst period ever.”

The pair also said that they would never appear on their hit show ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here!’ as contestants.
