Alan Rough shirts sell for £22,000

AN AUCTION of football shirts owned by Scotland goalkeeping legend Alan Rough exceeded all expectations yesterday when they went under the hammer for more than twice their original estimate.

Though they were expected to go for between 5,000 and 10,000, the footballer's 42 shirts, acquired during 53 international appearances, in the end were sold for 22,367 by Convery Auctioneers at a sale in Ingliston, near Edinburgh.

The shirts included one worn by English goalie Ray Clemence when he was nutmegged by Kenny Dalglish at Wembley.

Others, swapped with Rough, were worn by Pat Jennings and Billy Bremner.

David Convery, director of the company, said of the sale: "I was very surprised at the result. This sort of thing happens very seldom, but the whole section was well covered, we had a packed room, and received telephone bids from around the world. It's just fantastic."

The Bremner jersey was the star item of the sale, going for 1,700, more than three times the upper estimated price.

The shirts were found by Rough in the attic of his late father, to whom he had gifted them at the end of every game.
