A weevil horror tale as Butterkist popcorn is recalled

WATCHING the movies on TV this weekend could have turned into a horror story after tiny insects were found in packs of popcorn, forcing a nationwide recall.

Rice weevils were found in three packets of Butterkist Sweet Microwave multipack popcorn and one batch of Butterkist Sweet Microwave single pack popcorn.

The insects are 2mm to 3mm long and dark brown, according to Rentokil.

A statement from the company said: "We would like to reassure customers that this does not represent any form of health risk and that the problem has been identified and is limited to only these two Butterkist products.

"While the vast majority of Tangerine Confectionery products are made in our UK factories, the Microwave Popcorn is produced on our behalf in France, and was available in Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and other multiple and independent retailers between 29 January and 13 March, 2010."
