92 criminals freed in error

Almost 100 foreign criminals have been inadvertently released from prison instead of being deported in the past two years, the Home Secretary has said.

Theresa May said more work needed to be done to ensure that foreign nationals who committed crimes were sent home at the end of their jail sentence.

A total of 28 convicted foreign prisoners who should have been considered for deportation in 2010-11 were missed, along with 64 in 2009-10, Mrs May told the Commons home affairs select committee.

She said: “It’s right that the UK Border Agency has done a lot of work on this, but I’m absolutely clear that we need to do more.”
