25 hurt as two buses collide in Manchester

TWENTY-FIVE people, including several children, were hurt after two buses collided in Salford.

The incident at Lower Broughton Road, Charleston, ocurred just before 8am this morning.

A driver of one of the buses was also injured and was treated for a head wound at the scene by paramedics.

Several children injured in the crash were heading to school.

The front of both the single decker and double decker buses involved had cracked windscreens and twisted bodywork as a result of the crash.

The incident forced armed police to form a convoy around a vehicle carrying murder suspect Dale Cregan - the man charged with the murders of David and Mark Short - to Preston Crown Court.

Supt Leor Giladi, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “It is absolutely normal practice for armed officers to get out of their vehicles if the convoy they are in comes to a halt for any reason.

“This is what happened this morning when the vehicles were caught behind a collision and residents who may have seen our officers on the streets can be reassured it was nothing more than that.”
