UK news: University's links with Libya to be investigated

AN independent investigation into the London School of Economics' links with Libya has been ordered after the university's director resigned over the controversy.

Sir Howard Davies said that it had been a mistake to accept 300,000 research funding from a foundation controlled by Colonel Gaddafi's son Saif.

Brits drink most on holiday

BRITONS are Europe's heaviest holiday drinkers, according to a survey.

As many as 65 per cent of Britons drink more while on a trip abroad than at home, the poll from the TripAdvisor company found.

This compares with a figure of 41 per cent for other Europeans.

Higher education at risk from funding reforms

AN increasing number of universities could be at risk of going bust as a result of funding cuts and higher tuition fees, a study concludes.

A report by the National Audit Office calls for fresh guidelines on financial regulation for higher education, amid concerns that institutions will lose out from the Government's reforms.

While a number of universities are "financially strong", the report says, there is wide variation between institutions.

MOD paid 22 for 65p bulbs

THE Military of Defence paid 22 each for lightbulbs available for just 65p.

Defence chiefs are also said to have shelled out 103 each for screws, believed to be on sale online for 2.60.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox criticised the inflated prices as showing a "lack of common sense" and evidence of another waste of taxpayers' money by the previous Labour government.

Bedfordshire: Evacuated residents have been allowed home after a man found a bomb shell in his garage. Police were called to a street in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, yesterday afternoon, after the man discovered what he believed was an old bomb. Officers evacuated the houses on either side of the property.
