UK News: Three due in court over medic's murder

Three men will appear in court in Liverpool today charged with the murder of a medical student.

University of Liverpool student Muneeb Naseer, 21, from Bristol, died after a knife wound to the back of his leg severed an artery when he was attacked at his home in Wavertree, Liverpool, last July.

From today driving test candidates will have to drive "independently" for a period without getting step-by-step directions from their examiner.

However, the Driving Standards Agency has said that candidates can ask for reminders of their route and will not be failed for going off route.

Army 'couldn't afford' to give troops handguns

The father of a British soldier killed in Afghanistan said he was told it was too expensive to issue his son with a handgun.

Jimmy Major was one of five soldiers shot dead by a rogue Afghan policeman in Helmand Province last November.

His father Adrian said his son and his colleagues had little chance of defending themselves.

Mr Major said he was told by an army representative that it was too expensive to provide all soldiers with pistols.

'Suicide' over match fix link

The chairman of a football club caught up in the Pakistan match-fixing scandal is thought to have taken his own life.

David Le Cluse, 44, was found dead on Saturday with gunshot wounds in a garage near his home in Surrey.

He was chairman of Croydon Athletic, whose owner Mazhar Majeed was arrested following allegations that members of the Pakistan cricket team were involved in match fixing.
