UK News: Thousands of jobs lost through pub closures

THOUSANDS of jobs have been lost through pub closures, with 25 shutting their doors for good every week.

Around 1,300 pubs closed across Britain last year, with the loss of 13,000 jobs, said the British Beer & Pub Association.

The rate of losses was highest in London and the North West.

ED Miliband was today set to appeal for Labour voters to pass up the temptation to damage Nick Clegg and support reform of the electoral system.

Car CO2 emissions fall

Average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from new cars fell 3.5 per cent last year compared with 2009.

The fall in 2010 means new-car C02 emissions have declined by more than 20 per cent since 2000, figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed.

In 2000, average new-car CO2 emissions were 181.0 grammes per 1 kilometre. It dropped to 144.2g/km in 2010.

Money 'makes life worse'

GIVING poor people more money can actually make their lives worse, Iain Duncan Smith has insisted.

He hit out at the former Labour government for becoming "fixated" on increasing income levels through benefits and said employment is the "best route" out of poverty.

Double wins for Cox and Hart at television awards

SUFFOLK: Police are appealing for information after two men were shot dead near a caravan site. Armed officers were sent to investigate the incident, near Mildenhall in Suffolk, after receiving reports of gunfire at about 10.15pm yesterday and found a man dead on the ground, having apparently sustained gunshot wounds, and a second body in a burning car.

LONDON: Heathrow has slipped to fourth place in a table of the world's busiest airports. Atlanta in the US is first, with Beijing second and Chicago's O'Hare third, both overtaking Heathrow. Traffic has decreased at Heathrow.
